Exercise Sheet 12
Scattering without diffraction
- Exercise 1 the Toda spring
(i) Expand to fourth order in , and show that to cubic order it is the FPUT spring with . (ii) Describe the force for large compression () and large stretching (). (iii) Why can the linear term be dropped on a ring of springs, and what does dropping it do on the open chain?
- Exercise 2 two particles in closed form
Take , and , so that and with (Lecture 12). (i) Verify that solves both equations. (ii) Show that the momenta are exchanged by the collision. (iii) Show that the eigenvalues of are at every time. (iv) With and , show that as and as , with : the line carrying is displaced by . Find the time delay when . (v) What happens to the displacement for ?
- Exercise 3 independence, for three particles
For let , . (i) Compute the Jacobian , and show that it is . (ii) Deduce that are independent on a dense open set.
- Exercise 4 the first charges
For general : (i) Show that , and . (ii) Find the flows of and of : how does each move the positions? (iii) Why did nobody see as the generator of a symmetry of the positions?
- Exercise 5 asymptotic momenta, and three bodies
(i) Assuming Moser’s separation, as , show that the asymptotic momenta are the eigenvalues of , in increasing order along the chain as and decreasing as . (ii) For three particles with , compute , and write each as a sum of two-body displacements of Exercise 2, one per pair. (iii) Show that for every spectrum. What does this say about the centre of mass?
- Exercise 6 five particles, computed
(Computational.) Take , and . (i) Integrate the equations of motion from to , and check that , , stay constant, and that . (ii) Compare with the eigenvalues of . (iii) Fit the asymptotic lines, , and compare the displacements with Moser’s formula.
- Exercise 7 harder
For two particles the fibre is a plane. Lecture 12’s reading proves, in outline, that every connected component of a regular level set of the open chain is a copy of . Do it for . Let with , and use , and . (i) Show that , with , are coordinates on , so that . (ii) Show that the flow of moves at unit speed and fixes and , and that along the flow of , strictly decreases. (iii) Deduce that no combination with returns a point of to itself: the stabiliser of Lecture 5’s -action is trivial.
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
