Exercise Sheet 13
The Yang–Baxter equation
- Exercise 1 the permutation and its projectors
(i) Show that , and that are projectors with and . (ii) Show that , and deduce the dimensions of the symmetric and antisymmetric subspaces. (iii) For , identify the two subspaces with the spin triplet and singlet.
- Exercise 2 Yang’s matrix
Two particles with labels in and a label-blind delta interaction, with and, on , . Lecture 13 shows that where is symmetric in the positions with , and where it is antisymmetric . (i) For bosons the symmetric part is : show that . (ii) For fermions show that . (iii) For spin- fermions, what does do in the triplet and in the singlet? Why do two fermions with parallel spins not feel the delta?
- Exercise 3 along the momentum lines
(i) With , show that and . (ii) Show that , and deduce unitarity, , for both.
- Exercise 4 the Yang–Baxter equation for
On : (i) Show that , that , and that . (ii) Expand and by the number of ’s, and show that they are equal exactly because (for , where ). (iii) Deduce that and satisfy the Yang–Baxter equation.
- Exercise 5 a harmless-looking variant
Let . (i) Repeat the expansion of Exercise 4, and show that left minus right is with . (ii) Deduce that fails the Yang–Baxter equation for every (and ); give at , , .
- Exercise 6 the hexagon, for three labelled particles
Lecture 13’s three-body theorem puts the six amplitudes of the factorised ansatz on the permutations of and the contact conditions on the edges . (i) Draw the hexagon, and list the two routes from the incoming wave () to the outgoing one (), with the crossings each makes. (ii) (Computational.) For , and , build on as matrices and compare the two products. (iii) Do the same for at , and account for the size of the difference. (iv) Why is the equation automatic for particles without labels ()?
- Exercise 7 harder
The Yang–Baxter equation for . Let with continuous and never zero, and . (i) Show that satisfies the Yang–Baxter equation, with , if and only if for all , where . (ii) Show that the continuous solutions of this equation are , and deduce that : for , up to a scalar and a rescaling of , the rational R-matrix. (iii) Check against (ii).
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
