Exercise Sheet 14
The quantum inverse scattering method
- Exercise 1 the Lax operator of the Heisenberg chain
(i) On show that . (ii) Deduce Lecture 14’s matrix form of in the auxiliary space, with entries on the diagonal and , off it. (iii) Write as a matrix in the basis , , , (auxiliary state first). Check that exactly six entries are not identically zero (as functions of ), and explain, with the vertex picture of Lecture 14, why two of them are and not . (iv) For which is not invertible? Show that there it is a multiple of a projector, and that .
- Exercise 2 RLL fixes
Let with numbers , (which may depend on , ). (i) Following the proof of Lecture 14’s theorem, show that (ii) Deduce that the non-zero of this form satisfying are exactly the non-zero multiples of . (iii) At this is a multiple of . Show directly that .
- Exercise 3 the order of
Let satisfy with . (i) Using (Lecture 14), show that for the relation is equivalent to , with : the other order of the monodromies, with the other sign in . (ii) Show that satisfies the other order with the same : for all , (where is a polynomial in , as for the chain). For the Heisenberg chain, what is the Lax operator of ? (iii) Classically, let satisfy Lecture 9’s with . Show that satisfies the same bracket with in place of . Then, restoring (), expand the relation of (ii) to order as in Lecture 14’s classical limit, taking the symbol of to be , and check that it gives the same.
- Exercise 4 three sites by hand
Take the Heisenberg chain with . (i) Show that , for , and , and deduce (ii) Show that sends to , so that is times the shift by one site. Show that commutes with , and deduce directly. (iii) Show that , and so that Lecture 10’s Hamiltonian at is . (iv) Find the eigenvalues of and of , with their multiplicities.
- Exercise 5 symbols
One degree of freedom, , on functions of . (i) Show that , and by induction : the symbol formula of Lecture 14 for , . (ii) Compute exactly, and compare its symbol with . (iii) Show that exactly, for every . Deduce that the commutators of the entries of the quantum Toda site matrix are exactly times the Poisson brackets of the corresponding functions. Why does (ii) not contradict this?
- Exercise 6 the quantum Toda chain, and
Quantise Lecture 9’s periodic Toda chain as in Lecture 14: , , . (i) For , find and , and show that . (ii) Show directly that for . (iii) For , show that , and explain why no ordering question arises. Then verify by hand, with , and check that the terms of order cancel too.
- Exercise 7 harder
Any spin. Let be spin operators on a space , , and on put . Lecture 14 cites that it satisfies with the same ; prove it. (i) With and , show that for all , is equivalent to . (ii) Prove this identity, using only the commutation relations of . (iii) For an irreducible spin , find the eigenvalues of and their multiplicities, and show that for you recover .
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
