Exercise Sheet 16
The thermodynamic limit
- Exercise 1 the antiferromagnet by Fourier transform
(i) Show that . (ii) Transform the ground-state equation to find . Lecture 16 states that this is the transform of : prove it. (Parts (i) and (ii) use the residue theorem and the uniqueness of the Fourier transform, neither among Lecture 0’s prerequisites; Lecture 16 uses both.) (iii) Show that , and find the fraction of the ground state’s roots with in the thermodynamic limit.
- Exercise 2 the gas’s counting function, and the sign
(i) For the gas put , so that . Assuming, as Lecture 16 does, that roots and holes fill out densities , , derive , and Lieb’s equation for the ground state. (ii) Show that is strictly increasing for every set of real roots. Is ? (iii) Write both models as and find the two kernels .
- Exercise 3 strong coupling
(i) For free fermions on the ring, odd, with momenta , , show that , which tends to Lecture 16’s Tonks–Girardeau value . (ii) For , use on the sea to show that , that , and that . Compare with Lecture 11’s ring lengthened by .
- Exercise 4 Lieb’s equation by quadrature
(Computational.) Set . (i) Solve Lieb’s equation at by the Nyström method of Lecture 16’s tutorial with Gauss–Legendre points and give , , and . How far is from this value with , and points? (ii) By Hellmann–Feynman the interaction energy is at fixed , . Show that the kinetic and interaction energies are equal exactly where , and find that and there. (iii) Plot for on a logarithmic axis, with the two series of Lecture 16’s reading, and give and beside them.
- Exercise 5 the antiferromagnet’s roots
(Computational.) Take , and . (i) Solve the logarithmic Bethe equations by damped Newton, and give . (ii) Plot the local density against , and give the worst relative deviation five roots in from each end. (iii) Lecture 16’s reading predicts with . Compute at , , , and estimate the central charge .
- Exercise 6 two roots, one quantum number
(Computational.) Lecture 16’s tutorial meets two roots of , that share . (i) Solve the two logarithmic Bethe equations with by Newton from , to decimals. (ii) Evaluate at both roots and at their midpoint. Which hypothesis of Lecture 16’s vacancy count fails, and which of its statements survive? (iii) Build Lecture 10’s two-magnon wavefunction on them, (), with and , and check that it is an eigenvector of ().
- Exercise 7 harder
Why Lieb’s equation has one positive solution. Fix and , and let on continuous functions on with the sup norm. (i) Show that , and deduce that Lieb’s equation has exactly one continuous solution, . (ii) Show that . (iii) For show that on , and deduce that is strictly increasing, so that is strictly decreasing in : the step Lecture 16’s proof of Lieb’s theorem uses.
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
