Exercise Sheet 3
The exterior derivative, Stokes, and the symplectic form
- Exercise 1 in three dimensions
On with coordinates let (i) Compute . Is exact? If it is, find a primitive. (ii) Compute , and then directly. Using the table in the lecture’s reading on grad, curl and div, say which classical operator computes, and check the answer against the classical formula. (iii) Compute and name the classical quantity its coefficient is. (iv) Compute and , and check the graded Leibniz rule . Would the check catch the rule written with ?
- Exercise 2 the circulation round a small square
Let with and , and let , its boundary traversed anticlockwise. (i) Compute exactly, edge by edge, as a polynomial in . (ii) Show that as , and that this limit is at : the lecture’s reading of as circulation per unit area. (iii) Compute and compare it with (i). Which theorem have you verified? (iv) For a general smooth , pair opposite edges and expand to first order to show , although each edge alone is of order .
- Exercise 3 what the angle form sees
Let be the angle form on , and let throughout. (i) Compute over , , , and for an integer . For , find a primitive of on the half-plane instead of integrating. For you may use for . (ii) Obtain the answer for again without integrating: write down a deformation from the unit circle traversed clockwise to , check that it never meets the origin, and apply the lecture’s corollary on deformation invariance. (iii) The circle traversed anticlockwise and the circle traversed clockwise together make up the boundary of the annulus , with its induced orientation. Compute both integrals and check Stokes’ theorem on . Why does the deformation corollary not say that the two integrals are equal? (iv) Now let be any smooth closed curve in , written in polar form with smooth and on . (Every such curve can be written so; take that as given.) Closedness forces for an integer , the winding number of . Show that , however the loop wanders or crosses itself, and that , , is a deformation from to a loop on the unit circle that never meets the origin.
- Exercise 4 pulling back a -form
(i) Let be smooth. Show that , and deduce in polar coordinates. (ii) Let , and on minus the origin introduce , , by Show that , and that the choice , gives instead. (iii) With the first choice and , express in and solve there, using and the lecture’s sign test with in the place of . Check at that increasing is the direction of the motion. (iv) Compute round the curve , traversed with increasing, and compare it with the area of the region the curve encloses.
- Exercise 5 on the pendulum’s cylinder
The pendulum has phase space the cylinder , with an angle defined modulo . (i) is not a function on the cylinder. Explain why and are nevertheless -forms there, and compute . Is closed on the cylinder? (ii) For the level has a component on which : the pendulum rotates. Write , traversed in the direction of the motion, as an integral over , and show that it lies strictly between and . Deduce that the pullback of to the circle is closed but not exact. (iii) Now let on the same cylinder. Show that every level set is an invariant circle, and compute round it in the direction of the motion. What does the level say about the claim that the loop integral of round an invariant circle cannot vanish?
- Exercise 6 odd dimensions are degenerate
(i) Show that an antisymmetric real matrix is singular when is odd. Deduce that a manifold carrying a non-degenerate -form has even dimension. (ii) On find every vector with , where . (iii) On with coordinates find every with , where . Is closed? Is it symplectic?
- Exercise 7 harder
A magnetic symplectic form. On with coordinates and a real constant , let (i) Show that is symplectic. (ii) For , solve for , and solve the equations of motion it gives. Describe the orbits in the -plane, and show that is conserved — first by computing, then from the antisymmetry of alone. (iii) Let be a smooth function instead. Is still symplectic? What if depends on as well?
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
