Exercise Sheet 8
Lax pairs, and the spectral parameter
- Exercise 1 the oscillator’s Lax pair

(ii) The second step: show that is a linear system for the entries of ; that if solves it, so does for any functions ; and that the only antisymmetric solution continuous on the phase space is . (iii) Show that is the rotation through , and that , where is the vector turned through . Deduce the motion from .

With Lecture 8’s matrix (symmetric tridiagonal, diagonal , off-diagonal ), take antisymmetric and tridiagonal with unknown entries, and , and derive and from , entry by entry. Which entries determine them, and which only test the result? (ii) Compute , and in terms of and . Which of them did you know already? (iii) Use the Cayley–Hamilton theorem to write as a polynomial in , .
- Exercise 3 a gauge with ones above the diagonal

(iii) Show that , where is the strictly lower triangular part of , and deduce . Which first integrals survive the gauge transformation, and what is lost?
- Exercise 4 the Euler top in Lax form
Euler’s equations for the free top are with , (Lecture 8’s reading). For let be the antisymmetric matrix with . (i) Show that , and deduce that satisfies with . (ii) Show that . What does the spectrum of conserve? (iii) Show that is conserved, and that unless it is not a function of .
- Exercise 5 the ring, its site matrix, and zero curvature
(i) For the Toda ring with , , show that with . Write Lecture 8’s (with in the corners) and (antisymmetric, , indices modulo ), and verify . (ii) Why is degenerate? Compute for the ring. (iii) Show that the site matrix has determinant , that turns the eigenvalue recursion into , and that then for . (iv) With , compute , and show that for all and every exactly when the ring’s equations of motion hold.
- Exercise 6 what a Lax pair does not give
(i) Show that every Hamiltonian has a Lax pair of size . What does it conserve? (ii) For a free particle in , , with , show that , is a Lax pair, and compute using (Sheet 2, Exercise 1). Are the spectral invariants of a Lax pair in involution in general? (iii) In three sentences, say what the spectral parameter of the site matrix buys, with the Toda ring as the example.

Manakov’s spectral parameter. For the top of Exercise 4, let with , and . (i) Show that (and cyclically) and that . (ii) Show that and satisfy for every . (iii) Compute as a polynomial in and , and show that its coefficients determine , for all . (iv) For a symmetric top, , show that is conserved and that is determined by the coefficients of .
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
