Exercise Sheet 9
Why the integrals commute
- Exercise 1 the same bracket, computed twice
Take the oscillator’s Lax matrix of Sheet 8, Exercise 1. (i) Compute as a sum of terms . (ii) Write the same object as a matrix, and check its entry in row and column against the sum of (i). (iii) Write as a matrix. Check in two cases, and show that .
- Exercise 2 the Toda site matrix, entry by entry
For one site, . (i) Find the four non-zero brackets . (ii) Assemble them into the matrix . (iii) Compute as a matrix, then with , and check the quadratic Sklyanin bracket of Lecture 9 entry by entry.
- Exercise 3 the transfer matrix for two and three sites
(i) For compute , and check that is the Hamiltonian of the two-particle ring. (ii) Lecture 8 found the ring degenerate: its Lax matrix is with , , and . Show that nevertheless . (iii) For find , and check for the ring’s Lax matrix of Lecture 8, , , . Where does the constant come from?
- Exercise 4 involution for two sites, by hand
For the two-site ring, with as in Exercise 3: (i) Show that . (ii) Compute directly, and conclude. (iii) What does the flow of do, and why does that make (ii) work?
- Exercise 5 the two-particle ring, separated
Carry out the separation Lecture 9 promises for : put , , and . (i) Show that and that the other four brackets among vanish. (ii) Write in the new variables. Show that the centre of mass moves uniformly, that moves under , and that for the level set of is a closed curve, so Lecture 6’s action–angle variables apply to it. (iii) Show that with . Find the bands and the gap, and show that the gap closes exactly at the equilibrium.
- Exercise 6 and the bands
(i) For , extend the eigenvalue recursion periodically to all and impose the Bloch condition , (Lecture 9’s reading). Show that it becomes for , where is of Exercise 3 (iii) with and . Then show that . (ii) Show that and do not depend on , and that . In what sense is this independent of as a function on phase space? (iii) (Computational.) For take the state , with its mean subtracted. Compute by multiplying the site matrices, plot it with the lines , and find the band edges as the eigenvalues of and . Integrate the motion to and check that the band edges do not move while does.
- Exercise 7 harder
The open chain’s linear bracket. For the open two-particle Toda chain, with and (Lecture 8), Lecture 9’s reading asks for a constant with . (i) Compute the sixteen brackets , show that , and write it as a matrix. (ii) Compute for as a matrix, and compare entry by entry. (iii) Prove that any with , for a constant , has for all .
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
