Exercise Sheet 1
Phase space and flows
- Exercise 1 charts and phase spaces
(i) Write points of as . Let be without its top point , with the angle coordinate , and be without its bottom point , with . Show that consists of two arcs, and that is constant on each, with different constants. (ii) Give the configuration space, the phase space and its dimension for the spherical pendulum (a bob on a rigid massless rod, free to swing in every direction about a fixed point), the double pendulum (in a plane), and a free rigid body. (iii) A classical spin of fixed length has as its states the directions in space, the sphere . Take as given: is compact; the cotangent bundle of a manifold of dimension is the set of pairs (a point of , a momentum at ), the map forgetting the momentum is continuous, and the momenta at one point form a closed subset of that is a copy of (Lectures 2 and 4 build this properly); a closed subset of a compact space is compact; and continuous maps take compact sets to compact sets. Show that is not a cotangent bundle of any manifold of positive dimension.
- Exercise 2 flows, and completeness
(i) On take . Find the flow of , check that , and say whether is complete. (ii) Now take . Solve Hamilton’s equations from , and find for which the solution exists. Check that is constant along it. (iii) Let be a vector field on a manifold that conserves a smooth function () all of whose level sets are compact. Show that is complete. (iv) Show that the only smooth functions conserved by on are the constants, and that the conserved of (ii) has non-compact level sets. Show that, by contrast, the pendulum has compact level sets on its cylinder. What does (iii) conclude in each case?
- Exercise 3 a Lie bracket, and two flows that do not commute
On with coordinates let and . (i) Compute . Show that for and for . (ii) Find the two flows, and compute and . Are they equal? Is this consistent with the lecture’s theorem on commuting flows? (iii) Compute : follow , then , then backwards, then backwards. Compare the result with .
- Exercise 4 three phase portraits
For on , with find the equilibria and their energies. For each range of energies , say how many orbits the level set consists of and which are closed curves; name the levels that contain a separatrix; and say whether any orbit leaves every bounded set in finite time.
- Exercise 5 the period of the rotating pendulum
For the pendulum on its cylinder and , the lecture says the rotating orbit with is periodic. Let for . (i) Show that the period is , and that with . (ii) Show that , and that as . What motion is that limit? (iii) Show that as . (iv) Evaluate numerically.
- Exercise 6 Liouville’s theorem on phase-space volume
Let be a vector field on with flow , and , the Jacobian determinant of . (i) Show that , and deduce , so that . (ii) Show that on for every smooth , and deduce Liouville’s theorem: the flow of preserves phase-space volume, , for every region and every time for which is defined on all of . (iii) For (Exercise 2), at which points is defined? Why does the theorem need its qualification? (iv) For , find the image of the unit disc under . What is preserved, and what is not? (v) For the damped oscillator , with , which is not Hamiltonian, find .
- Exercise 7 harder
The bracket is the failure of two flows to commute. Let and be smooth vector fields on , with flows and . (i) Show that . (ii) Show that (iii) Check (ii) against Exercise 3 (iii). (iv) Deduce one half of the lecture’s theorem on commuting flows: if for all small , then .
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
