Exercise Sheet 19
Why integrable systems do not thermalise
- Exercise 1 local charges
(i) Show that , and that in a translation-invariant state. (ii) Show that the local charges of range at most form a space of dimension , and those of range at most a space of dimension when , below Lecture 19’s bound . What is it when ?
- Exercise 2 dephasing, and a spectator
(i) For show that . (ii) Let , a chain with Hamiltonian and eigenbasis , beside a spectator spin that feels nothing, and start from . Show that for all ; that over the product eigenbasis , is ; and that Lecture 19’s dephased state gives . What went wrong with the second?
- Exercise 3 the occupations
(i) Show that and . (ii) For , , compute , and show that is even in . (iii) Lecture 19 warns that the sum angle gives a plausible and wrong . For this quench, how wrong, at worst over ?
- Exercise 4 the generalised Gibbs value, and the Gibbs one
(Computational.) Take the quench of Exercise 3. (i) Compute . (ii) Compute the energy per site after the quench, the temperature at which the Gibbs state of has this energy (thermal occupations ), and the Gibbs value of . (iii) At , show that , and deduce that in every state diagonal in the occupations: there the observable cannot tell the two ensembles apart.
- Exercise 5 the amplitude
(i) Show that . (ii) For and , show that it has a double zero at the stationary points of ; at (with ), only a simple zero in at . What if ? (Lecture 19’s stationary-phase step turns these into decays like and .) (iii) What does do at ?
- Exercise 6 the ground state is even
Lecture 19’s proof of the relaxation theorem needs the pre-quench ground state in the even sector. Take . (i) In the basis of joint eigenvectors of every , show that has off-diagonal entries between configurations differing in one spin, and otherwise. (ii) Perron–Frobenius (an outside fact): a real symmetric matrix whose off-diagonal entries are , and which connects every basis vector to every other through non-zero entries, has a non-degenerate lowest eigenvalue with a strictly positive eigenvector. Deduce that the ground state of is unique and, in this basis, positive. (iii) Deduce that it is even.
- Exercise 7 harder
Which charges are local. For an even let , whose real-space hopping and pairing coefficients, in each sector, are the Fourier coefficients of and (Lecture 19’s sketch). Take with . (i) Show that . (ii) Deduce that has finite range if and only if with a trigonometric polynomial. (iii) (Computational.) For and , compute the ratios of consecutive Fourier coefficients of at , , , . What do they say about ?
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
