Exercise Sheet 5
The Liouville–Arnold theorem
- Exercise 1 independence and involution
(i) Let be any smooth function on a phase space and any smooth function of one variable. Show that and that and are linearly dependent at every point. What does this say about counting functions in involution? (ii) On with , let with for , and . Show that , and that and are linearly dependent exactly at the points where is perpendicular to with : the circular orbits. (iii) Take the Kepler potential . For fixed , show that the smallest energy is , reached on the circular orbit of radius , and that the level set is exactly that circle. Which hypothesis of the theorem fails there, and which conclusion?
- Exercise 2 deleting involution
On let and , and fix and with . (i) Show that are not in involution. (ii) Show that the level set is a -sphere, compact and connected, and that are independent at every point of it. (iii) Show that is not Lagrangian and not invariant under the flow of . Which conclusion of the theorem fails, and why does this not contradict it?
- Exercise 3 one degree of freedom, components, and a cylinder
(i) (Stage (iv) with .) Let be a compact connected component of a level set of on which , and . The flow of acts on , and the lecture’s stage (iii) shows that the orbit of is all of . Show that the stabiliser is either or for some , and that compactness excludes . What is , and what is ? (ii) For at (Sheet 1, Exercise 4), how many components has the level set? What does the theorem say about the level set, and what about each component? (iii) The pendulum at , with taken in (not modulo ): what is each component of the level set, and what is its stabiliser? Which hypothesis fails? What changes on the cylinder? (iv) On let and . Show that they are in involution, and describe a component of for . Find the stabiliser of the action of on it, and check the lecture’s .
- Exercise 4 the two-dimensional oscillator, stages (ii)–(iv)
Let with , , and a point with . (i) Write the action of , , explicitly. Why does the order of the two flows not matter? (ii) Find the stabiliser of , and deduce that the level set through is a -torus. (iii) Take the basis , of . Find the angles and the two basis cycles, and show that the flow of is .
- Exercise 5 harder
The spherical pendulum’s energy–momentum map. Away from the poles, with the conventions of optional lecture A (unit mass, length and gravity, measured from the upward vertical, so that the height is ), (i) Show that . With , show that for the function has exactly one critical point, a minimum at some with . (ii) Deduce that for the energies reached are exactly , and show that . (iii) For , show that and are dependent exactly on the circles , (the conical motions), and that for the level set is a -torus. (iv) At the pendulum swings in a vertical plane, and its two equilibria — hanging down and balanced upright — lie on the poles, outside these coordinates. Their energies are and . Show that the value lies inside the image of the map , above the curve .
Where are the worked solutions? They are worked through in the tutorial, which is where the learning in them actually happens, so they are not published here. Bring what you could not finish.
